The BD controller chip is always the biggest one.
The NoBD firmwares doesnt makes that checkĪs said, depends of the PS3 model, check at this table, the column named DB (indicating the DaughterBoard) the firmware installer (named swu.self iirc) inside the PS3UPDAT.PUP makes a check to the bluray controller chip (located in the BD daughterboard in all PS3 models older than CECH-25xx), if the BD controller chip doesnt replyes then the installation is interrupted and you are locked in a trap because the PS3 doesnt have a firmwaware installed and doesnt allows to install a firmware
The other PS3's models with NOR flash (for a total capacity of 16mb inside the flash) are the ones that forces you to install a firmware when you format the hddĪt the point you install the firmware. The PS3's with NAND flash (for a total capacity of 256mb or so inside the flashes) the full firmware is installed inside NAND, you can format the hdd and the firmware stays intact
